Hi, could you provide an update on the future direction of the Expression Design product? Is it being dropped? It seems as if almost no effort is being put into its further development, but afaik Microsoft have made no official statement. This is a poor way to treat customers and partners who are using the software, or evaluating whether it is worth doing so.

Hi – Apologies for the delay in answering your question. I think the important thing to do right away is recognize Expression Design for what it is - Design was created as a design tool with a very focused toolset and workflow to enable you to create both XAML assets for Silverlight and WPF projects or bitmap assets for Expression Web. In essence a great supporting product for Expression Web and Expression Blend, and that’s still the role it plays today. Design received a substantial upgrade in version 2 when we introduced Adobe Illustrator import and comprehensive new export and slicing capabilities. Version 3 brought the ability to import Adobe Photoshop files and version 4 added EPS support. In each release we’ve updated the XAML exporter to support the latest platform releases as well as adding other small feature enhancements and bug fixes. Our main focus for Expression as a whole has been on providing the best workflow story for Silverlight, WPF, HTML and Windows Phone… and with this in mind we placed our investments for Expression 3 and Expression 4 where they would have the maximum impact and benefit for the majority of our customers. Looking forward to the next version of Design, Web and Blend I don’t see the level of investment changing drastically across the different products from previous versions. I’d be very interested in learning more about your experience with Design and how you are using it in your current workflow. Are there scenarios you are working on where you feel your workflow is either blocked or just doesn’t work as smoothly as you’d expect. We’d love to hear more about what we can do to make your day to day life in the products easier and more productive. Please either leave additional feedback on the blog or email me directly at jon.harris@microsoft.com Thanks! Jon Harris Senior Product Manager Expression
