What’s So Special About SharePoint’s December Update?

Just in case you didn’t already know, a cumulative update for SharePoint Server 2010 was released in mid-December, and it’s a big deal for business intelligence.

Cumulative Update 2011-12 (CU 2011-12) for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 is exciting because it enables people to view PerformancePoint reports, scorecards, Excel Services reports, and other items on Apple iPad devices. Imagine how convenient it will be for users to open and use dashboards on an iPad.

    This is awesome news. I will be completing the tests of December 2011 and will be installing on the production environment soon. We have some projects coming up which require PerformancePoint and the fact that we will be able to see some reports via the iPad is great news, especially for our Sales guys!     Very nice! will be interesting to see what kind of security we can achieve with this solution. btw: does "Reporting services" include PowerView? if not, will we (on SQL2012RTM) be able to view PowerView reports on IPad? Regards, Gorm / information-management-enabled.blogspot.com

    Since PowerView is based on Silverlight vs HTML5, you're not going to be able to view it on an IPad until/unless someone builds an app

    We have noticed 3 issues after the update.

  1. deployment of a dashboard fails 3 ties, then works the forth time. After each failed deployment, the system checked out one of the reports and fails to check it in. So we have to deploy, fail, check in, and repeat 3 more times.
  2. If two different reports are on the same dashboard page, each using different measures and different fact tables from the same cube. The second report always defaults with the measure of the first cube in SharePoint. In Designer, the reports measures are correct. If you change the measure of the second report, then select a new filter, the second report's measure is returned to the first report's measure. This is interesting as it is not even part of the same fact table.
  3. In SharePoint if you click a measure to change it from a Designer generated dashboard page, the window size is not large enough and requires the user to scroll down to find the OK button. If you create your own dashboard page using SharePoint and web parts, then change the measures, the window size is correct. Anyone else have these issues or a possible solution?

    Scott, Regarding issue #1, can you tell me how many web parts you had on the page to which you were deploying?

    It would be great if the information about the ipad report card is also mentioned in the description of the update. So often with MS updates there is not enough information in the description of updates and patches, you have to search around blogs to try and get the whole picture.

    Paul, what information is missing that you would like to know about? This post was meant to talk about the fact PerformancePoint was now compatible with iPad devices, not necessarily to detail the complete behavior. But we would be happy to create a post specific to that.

    Hi I was referring to the download description page support.microsoft.com/.../2597014 which is utimately linked too and provides information about the update, and not the blog post which is clear and informative. The download description does not mention the enhancements to SharePoint described in this blog posting, which I think is an oversight. No mention of ipads and reports or performance point that I could see, just the list of fixes. Just some feedback because I only found this blog page through a twitter feed by chance. Thanks for replying quickly and keep up the good work.
