Healthcare Reference Implementations
As you might know, we released over the past year a number of Reference Implementations specific to Healthcare and Life Sciences. These RI take a business problem and show how you can solve it by applying Microsoft technologies, with particular emphasis on the Office System (InfoPath, SharePoint, Word and so on).
With the RI we went a step further by including sample code (so that you can replicate in your environment) and prescriptive guidance (so that you can adapt the RI to solve your problems).
The Reference Implementations that we have available today are:
Clinical Trial Initiation Reference Implementation for Microsoft Office 2003
Targeted at developers and IT implementers, this download of sample code, templates, and guidelines is intended to demonstrate technically one possibility of implementing a solution to expedite the creation of clinical trial protocol documents by using the Microsoft Office System. The content provided with the reference implementation illustrates how to use XML-based Microsoft Word smart documents to manage the creation of complex documents and re-use existing content from a Microsoft Windows® SharePoint® Services document library.
From a business perspective, the Clinical Trial Initiation reference implementation for Microsoft Office 2003 shows how pharmaceutical companies can expedite the creation of clinical trial protocol documents as follows:
- Re-use of existing scientific data and other protocol content
- Coordination of document creation among contributors
- Control of author access to minimize errors and delays
Care Management Reference Implementation for Microsoft Office 2003
Intended for developers and IT implementers, this download of sample code, templates, and guidance demonstrates one possibility for implementing a solution to extend care management programs to more members using the Microsoft Office System. The content provided with the reference implementation illustrates how to use Microsoft Office InfoPath® 2003 XML-forms to streamline task management and to utilize Microsoft Office SharePoint® Portal Server 2003 to implement a unified process and documentation approach.
From a business perspective, the Care Management reference implementation shows how health plans can increase their care management capacity.
Microsoft Office Reference Implementation for Clinical Forms
The Microsoft Office reference implementation for clinical forms includes a guide, an InfoPath form, and code samples, which together provide an example of the automation of patient information collection, retrieval, and sharing in an emergency department.
The sample form, code, and architecture can be used to jumpstart the development of your own solution for the healthcare industry.

This last RI is also particularly interesting if you are using the HL7 Accelerator for BizTalk 2004 as it contains some specific guidance:
- Chapter 5, Development Considerations, under "BizTalk Accelerator for HL7 Development Tasks". It has some info on customizing namespaces, and the MLLP timeout value.
- Chapter 7, Appendix: Programmatic Details, under "BizTalk Reference". Has some good info on how ACKs work with BTAHL7. In this chapter, also check out "Detecting Dropped Messages", which details behavior you might see when using MLLP ports with receive timeouts.
I have seen companies and partners adopt these RI to jump start their development and some of them have turned into commercial applications.
So, download the code and documentation today and let's start something. Let me know about your success stories.
