    I get the error verify the mssql$SQLExpress service exists, even though Services shows its there

    One other idea: please run "sc query mssql$sqlexpress" at a command prompt, and paste the results into a comment on this blog.

    That would fix the problem, too, since you can add local administrators from the SA config tool.  You know.... what we like to call "the right way" to do things.

    Great, finally. I moved my user from local user to AD user after installing VS, was really stuck with the permissions in SQL, and this finally solved it. Thanks a lot :-)

    I wish I had found this sooner. Could have saved me tons of time. I uninstalled sqlserver express from my desktop. Now planning to re-install it.
