WSUS 3 Developer's Blog - API samples... (part 2) 3 more scripts coming

https://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/scripts/sus/server/default.mspx?mfr=true

Sorry it's a bit of a slow process - but we're still trying to trickle out more API examples based on scenario requests from customers and ISVs.

3 more scripts will be up sometime today, including:

  • Importing your AD group structure as target groups.
  • Show list of computers needing reboots
  • A basic report on only updates that have been approved. You can do things like scheduling this report via "Scheduled Tasks," and archive the reports on a regular basis.  We've also gathered data over time, and used Excel to show trending graphs.  If you're interested in some tips/tricks on displaying reports within Excel, comment here and we'll share our experience.

I am writing a PowerShell script to gather reports from the WSUS API.   I am trying to narrow down my selection using the UpdateScope interface.  It seems like I should be able to write this as follows: $updateScope = new-object Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration.UpdateScope; $updateScope.Classifications = "Critical Updates" When launching the script, I keep getting an error that "Classifications" is a ReadOnly property.  Any clues on how to filter the updates by Classification.  Documentation is limited, and I cannot find any PowerShell samples using this.   Any help would be appreciated.

I'm just a huge fan of WSUS. And, if you look macroeconomically at the patch management software market, you can tell that others are too. What do I mean? Only that once WSUS 2.0 came out, there seemed to be a bunch of patch management companies that

I am looking for a script that will run the "Computer Tabular Status" report from WSUS 3.0 - where it lists the total updates, the needed updates, the failed updates... etc, for each machine without going into much detail about each update. We're looking for a summary of the update statistics for each computer, in a list (pretty much exactly the way the "Computer Tabular Status" report would look. I am in a very big need of this script to use for automated reporting for our clients.

I am trying to run the sample scripts on my client machine against a remote WSUS server.   I started with script that lists computers that need a reboot (here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/scripts/sus/server/susvms08.mspx).  Then I changed the GetUpdateServer() call to GetUpdateServer("servername", $false).   This fails universally from PowerShell.  However, if I port the script to C# it works.   When it fails in PowerShell this is error message that I get. Exception calling "GetUpdateServer" with "2" argument(s): "The type initializer for 'Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.Constants' threw an exception." Do you guys have any suggestions on how to get the remote API working via PowerShell? Thanks, Eric

Hi, I wrote some vbscript last spring that queried the wsus 2.0 tables using sqloledb provider.   I realize we should migrate to powershell probably, but how could I get my vbscript working again against the WSUS 3.0 Windows Internal Database?  I think it's really sql 2005 embedded edition but I can't figure out how to connect anymore and I need a quick-fix before re-writing in powershell. thanks, Bruce

Digging into Powershell and working with the Server API seems to have lots of potential.  I would like to be able to provide a report that lists all of the updates that are pending.  This would help the change approval process.  I have looked at the server api as well as WMI for the local node but have had no success...

Thanks for the examples. Very useful in helping explore the API. One question though on replia servers and providing rollup reports to the primary server. I've got the following code to enumerate PC's within a target computer group. The target group has been created on the root server. Clients checkin to replica servers and get updates via these groups. Although rollup reporting has been enabled on replica servers when I run the code on the root server it returns 0 clients for that target group. If I run the code on the replica then it returns the PC's.    Dim UpdateServer As IUpdateServer    Sub Main()        Dim myserver As String = Console.ReadLine()        UpdateServer = AdminProxy.GetUpdateServer(myserver, False)        Console.WriteLine("Enter target group:")        Dim TargetGroup As String = Console.ReadLine()        Dim groupID As System.Guid        Dim groups As ComputerTargetGroupCollection = UpdateServer.GetComputerTargetGroups()        Dim group As IComputerTargetGroup        For Each group In groups        If group.Name = TargetGroup Then            groupID = group.Id        End If        Next        Dim selectGroup As IComputerTargetGroup = UpdateServer.GetComputerTargetGroup(groupID)        Dim subGroup As ComputerTargetGroupCollection = selectGroup.GetChildTargetGroups()    Dim childobj As IComputerTargetGroup    For Each childobj In subGroup        Call collectClients(childobj)    Next End Sub Sub collectClients(ByVal grpName As IComputerTargetGroup)    Console.WriteLine(grpName.Name)    Dim clientGrp As ComputerTargetCollection = grpName.GetComputerTargets(True)    For Each computer As IComputerTarget In clientGrp        Console.WriteLine(computer.FullDomainName)    Next End Sub Regards, Paul

Okay, really need some help here. Been googling for hours without luck. I'm writing an asp.net (vb) app that queries our WSUS 3.0 server. (WSUS uses SQL 2005 back end on a remote machine.) My asp app runs on a different machine than WSUS. I can't get adminproxy.getupdateserver("serverName", false) to work. Everytime my page loads, I get an asp exception stating "The system could not find the specified file." Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much. Regards, Chris

Hello, I've hit a stumbling block trying to understand how to get the updates installed / not appilicable count from a target group. $computerScope = new-object  Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration.ComputerTargetScope; $updates = $wsus.GetSummariesPerUpdate($updateScope, $computerScope); If I have a group called "Exchange" how do I amend the ComputerTargetScope to only be the target computers in that group rather than globally? Or alternatively is there a method that summerises the counts from the target group level? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
