Power BI Q&A

**What is it?

Power BI Q&A**

is currently available as part of the Power BI for Office 365 Preview.  Q&A enables users to discover, explore and visualize their own enterprise data using natural language.   Answers to questions are shown in the form of visualizations that make it easy to explore your data, and, the visualizations change dynamically as you modify the question.

How does it work?

There are two parts to Q&A.  The first part is the "modeling."  The second part is the "consuming."  In some companies, employees known as Data Modelers or ITAdmins might be the ones to aggregate the data into workbooks, create the Power Pivot models, and publish the workbooks to the SharePoint Power BI site.  While a second set of employees may be the ones to "consume" the data online.  In other companies, these roles may be combined.

It all starts with the enterprise data you already have in Excel, or that can be pasted or imported into an Excel workbook.  In each of those workbooks, create a Power Pivot model over the data and tune it to work with Q&A. When the model is ready, upload the workbook to an Office 365 Power BI site. After uploading, create some popular questions to help users get started querying the data.

On the Power BI site, users will see all the available workbooks as well as the popular questions.  Users can jump right in by clicking one of the popular questions or can click the Ask icon to write their own natural language questions.  Users get to decide whether the questions are asked across the data in only one workbook or in more-than-one workbook.

Q&A is currently only available in Preview "consume" mode.  With the Preview you can try out Q&A by querying 2 different workbooks provided by Microsoft.
