Troubleshooting Win7 Backup: 0x80070002 possibly due to wrong path info in registry

As I see a lot of also recent entries in the web for 0x80070002 here my experience, as it could help in many cases, where a wrong path is known.

0x80070002 Beim Sichern der Datei "C:\Users\Rudolf\Desktop\Downloads" ist ein Problem aufgetreten. Fehler: (Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden. (0x80070002))

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit

 

Backup failed for following file: "C:\Users\Rudolf\Desktop\Downloads" (The system could not find the file indicated (0x80070002)).

The existing folder was not included instead, that is the real problem

 

Cause

Windows Backup, with automatic Windows selection option selected, takes the Path from registrtry entries despite they could be in error.

The correct location of this folder is "C:\users\Rudolf\downloads".

 

There were following erroneous entries in the registry in this case, found by searching the path value desktop\downloads in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folder

{374DE290-123F-4565-9164-39C4925E467B}

C:\Users\Rudolf\Desktop\Downloads

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Solution

Edit these entries with the registry editor to the correct values the problem was solved.
