Yammer: Change your preferred language and start translating for your language!

Change your Language

Many times was questioned if Yammer was available in languages other than English. Thought that maybe it's time to write a small article about it.

Well, to be honest, didn’t know if it was possible. After a little research we figured out that it is, but you’ll have to search for it. By default, the user Interface of Yammer is in English.

You should actually edit your profile for getting another language. Therefore please hit the "three dots" button and select “Edit Profile”.

Now have a look at the page and locate the word “English US”. You have to edit your profile otherwise the English US link won’t be available.

The first thing that hits is actually the languages are still in BETA. The second thing is that Yammer offers us as many languages as possible. You have:

Select your preferred language and the Yammer User Interface will appear in that language. Select French, and voila! Yammer is now in French.

Start Translating

When changing the default language to another one,  a new link will appear named “Start Translating

You’ll be redirected to another page named Translation Tools – Français Language (if you set your preferred language in French as me). You can also be a valuable member and contribute for Yammer by translating. This can be very interesting because not everything on Yammer seems to be correct. If your translation has been accepted your points will be increased on your Dashboard.

Gamification is a real added value to any platform and Microsoft uses this everywhere when possible. Gamification techniques strive to leverage people’s natural desires for competition, achievement, status, self-expression, altruism, and closure. A core gamification strategy is rewarded for players who accomplish desired tasks. Types of rewards include points, achievement badges or levels, the filling of a progress bar, and providing the user with virtual currency.

The top five users that are translating are as follows. So please join me to congratulate them for their excellent work.

If you are good in translations, you can also be a part of that gamification process and begin translating. Under the “Phrases” section, you can translate every single phrase that hasn’t been translated yet by the community.

There are many translations to do as you can see. If you want a better Enterprise Social network, then join all the other community members and begin translating! This will absolutely help Yammer and all other Microsoft products to become better.

PS: Note that not only SharePoint but also Yammer can give a “Something went wrong” message. :-)
