Printing to your Windows Print Server with a Apple Mac

In order to allow a MAC to utilize our network printers please do the following under and Administrator account (Local Admin is preferred).

  1. Go to System Preferences on the Mac.
  2. Go to Security and Privacy
  3. Under the General Tab, click on the lock to make changes, enter admin credentials (if needed).
  4. Change Allow apps download from: to Anywhere
  5. Open Safari and go to http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/macosx/pxlmono#Foomatic-RIP_for_Mac_OS_X_10.3.x_.28Panther.29_-_Mac_OS_X_10.8.x_.28Mountain Lion.29
  6. Under Downloads Required Do the following: (***NOTE*** Do in this order or it will fail)
    1. Click on Foomatic-RIP 4.0.6 and install on the MAC
    2. Click on gplgs-8.71.dmg and install on the MAC
    3. Click on pxlmono-1.9.dmg and install on the MAC
  7. After installing these packages please close Safari and Open System Preferences.
  8. Click on Printers and Scanners
  9. Click on +
  10. If your printer is on the list please select it and skip to step 19.
  11. If your printer is not listed the click on add a printer.
  12. If your printer is listed then select it and skip to step 19.
  13. If your printer is not listed Click on IP at the top of the box.
  14. For address enter the server FQDN (For Example, someserver.somedomain.com)
  15. Protocol should be LPD
  16. Queue should be printer name (For Example, NetworkPrinter)
  17. Name should be the printer name again so change the name to match the printer name.
  18. Enter the location of the printer.
  19. For Use select Software and a box will open.
  20. Type the make of the printer in the search box to skip to those printers. (For Example, Ricoh)
  21. Search for a driver that matches or closely matches the printer. (For example, Ricoh Aficio MP C5502 is actually the MP C5501A driver)
  22. After selecting the driver setup will ask for you to confirm printer settings or capabilities.

Finish and enjoy using the printers.

As long as you do all of this under and administrator account (prefer Local Admin) anyone who logs in after will already have access to the proper drivers and any installed printers.
