Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 provides the capability to schedule workers for a project either based on its requirements and schedule, or based on the skills and availability of workers. The worker scheduling tools in AX 2012 are designed to help you quickly find the most qualified workers who are available to work on the tasks and activities in a project. These tools also let you easily see how you can best utilize those workers during the project based on their available capacity.
This article introduces you to resources to help you understand how worker resource scheduling for projects works in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, what general setting choices you must make for projects to support resource scheduling, and how to search for and select the workers whose time you want to book for your projects.

Set up resource scheduling options for all projects. |
Select the working calendar that will be used as the default for the projects you manage and specify how closely workers’ skills and availability must match your search requirements before they are shown in available worker lists. |
|
Set up worker attributes. |
In versions of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 earlier than cumulative update 7 for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2, you can provide information about a worker that is used to help match the worker to available jobs when you search for available resources. This includes information about education, skills, certifications, project experience, and various other attributes you might want to make relevant to a project role. |
|
Specify an individual worker’s project options. |
Make settings in an individual worker’s profile that determines how the worker’s project work is recorded, such as their period code, default project categories, and category and project validation. |

Set up basic project scheduling details. |
Before you can begin assigning workers to a project, certain types of project information must be specified first in the Projects form. In versions of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 earlier than cumulative update 7 for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2, this information is specified on the Scheduling and resource assignment FastTab. In cumulative update 7 for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 and later versions, this information is specified on the Project team and scheduling FastTab. |

Schedule workers for projects
In all versions of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 you can schedule workers for project in two ways:
View a project schedule and find available, qualified workers to assign to its tasks
View a worker’s availability and find a project the worker is qualified for
In some later versions of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, you can choose from additional methods for assigning workers to projects. The following table contains links to resources that describe how to do this.
