Windows Mobile software provides networking and communications capabilities that enable devices to connect and communicate with other devices and people over both wireless and wired networks. The following list shows the networking drivers, protocols, and application programming interfaces (APIs).

In This Section

  • Bluetooth
A short-range wireless technology that enables data communication between devices. It also provides the capability for using a Bluetooth-enabled cellular phone as a data modem, exchanging information with other Bluetooth devices, and providing network access.

  • CellCore
CellCore is a set of services that enables you to create wireless-connection oriented services on your device. This set includes the Radio Interface Layer (RIL), Short Message Service (SMS) support, Wireless Application Protocol Support (WAP), an Extended TAPI and TSP, Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card support, AT Command Interpreter (ATCI) and a Connection Manager.

  • Connection Manager
Manages network connections for devices that use CellCore services.

  • Infrared Communications
Many Microsoft Windows Mobile–based devices have an infrared port compliant with the Infrared Data Association (IrDA). The IrDA specifies standards for hardware specifications and software protocols.

  • Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)
LDAP Client for Microsoft Windows Mobile supports Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 3.0, which is used to access the membership directory that stores names, addresses, phone numbers, and other types of information.

  • Remote Connections
Remote Access Service (RAS) connects a client to a host computer, known as a remote access server.

The Extensible Authentication Protocol allows third-party authentication code to interact with the implementation of the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) included in the Windows CE–based Remote Access Service (RAS).

The Remote API (RAPI) library enables applications that run on a desktop to perform actions on a remote Microsoft® Windows® CE-based device. The functionality that RAPI2 provides includes the ability to manipulate the file system on the remote device, including the creation and deletion of files and directories.

  • Servers
Provides a services loader allowing servers to be loaded, started, and stopped dynamically. It also provides the ability to load servers dynamically based on network requests to the device.

  • TCP/IP
TCP/IP for Microsoft Windows Mobile-based devices allows devices to participate as peers and servers on local area networks (LANs) and remote networks.

  • Telephony
The Telephony API implementation in Windows Mobile is a subset of the Microsoft Telephony Application Programming Interface (TAPI) version 2.0 and some parts of TAPI version 2.1.

  • Windows Networking API/Redirector Reference
The Windows Networking API/Redirector (SMB/CIFS) implementation in Microsoft Windows Mobile provides functions to establish and terminate network connections and to access files on servers supporting the Common Internet File System (CIFS).

  • Windows Sockets
Windows Sockets (Winsock) Windows Mobile-based devices specifies a programming interface based on the familiar socket interface.
