Reissuing Licenses When Subscriptions Are Renewed

When a consumer renews a subscription, it is important to continue your service without interruption or inconvenience to the consumer. Therefore, to renew a subscription, you can simply reissue updated licenses for the files the consumer has already downloaded—you might do this when the consumer pays for the subscription renewal, for example. Otherwise, the consumer will not be able to continue to play the files from the previous subscription period, without connecting to the Internet first to reacquire those licenses.

For example, Fred and Pat subscribe to your Web site and each download 10 songs. One month later, the licenses for these songs expire. Fred renews his subscription and at that time your site reissues the 10 licenses with a new expiration date. Fred continues to play these songs, and is unaware of the licensing process. However, Pat does not renew her subscription. When she tries to play a song she downloaded previously, a Web page (specified by the license acquisition URL) is displayed to tell her that she must renew her subscription before she can play the song.
