Prerequisites for AdventureWorks 2008R2 Sample Reports (SSRS)

Audience

These tutorials provide instructions to build reports in Report Designer in Business Intelligence Development Studio. It is assumed that you have previous experience designing Reporting Services reports. For example, it is assumed that you know how to perform common report design tasks by using dialog boxes, toolbars, property pane, and context menus.

If you are a beginning report writer, we recommend that you first learn about report design concepts and features from Report Builder topics, tutorials, samples, and videos. For more information, see Getting Started with Report Builder 3.0 and Tutorials (Report Builder 3.0) in the Report Builder 3.0 documentation on msdn.microsoft.com.

Requirements

You must have the following prerequisites to complete these tutorials:

• Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services Business Intelligence Development Studio installed. You must run this BI Development Studio with sufficient permissions to deploy your reports to the target location. 

  If User Account Control (UAC) is supported and enabled on your operating system, to deploy reports to a report server, you must run BI Development Studio under elevated privileges. 

  • From the Start menu, navigate to SQL Server, right-click SQL Server Business Intelligence Studio, and open Properties. On the Compatibility tab, in Privilege Level, select Run this program as an administrator.

• Access to a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services report server or a SharePoint site that is integrated with a SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services report server. You must have permission to save and view reports, shared data sources, and shared datasets. You must have the URL to the report server or SharePoint site. For example:

  • Report server   http://<servername>/reportserver

  • SharePoint site   http://<sitename> or http://<server>/<sitename>

• The name of a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 instance and credentials sufficient for read-only or greater access to the AdventureWorks 2008R2 database. For more information, see Reporting Services Samples.

• To display the Bing maps tile layer in Sales_by_Region_2008R2 map report, the report server must be configured to support Bing maps. For more information, see Planning for Map Support.

Recommendations

It is recommended that you install the AdventureWorks 2008R2 sample reports from CodePlex. You can use these reports to compare to as you build your own versions of them. For more information, see Reporting Services Samples.
