You can install all of Visual Studio Team Foundation Server on a single server. By installing this way, you can reduce the complexity of installation, especially if you are using all new installations of prerequisite software to host the configuration database, the report server, and the portal server.
A single server installation means that Team Foundation Server and its configuration database are hosted on the same server. If you use optional features that require prerequisite server software, these installations must also be hosted on the server. Team Foundation Server includes two such features: reporting and a team portal for sharing documents.
Reporting on Single Servers
If you want to use the reporting feature, you must install SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server Analysis Services on your server. With these features installed, you can use the standard installation wizard for Team Foundation Server. If you do not want to set up a report server, you can use the advanced installation wizard for Team Foundation Server to skip setting up the report server.
Team Foundation Server requires a report server dedicated only to its use. You cannot share the report server with any other application.
Portal Server on Single Server
You can use the Team Foundation Server Configuration Tool to install and configure Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. If you do not want to use Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, you can install a supported version of SharePoint Products before you install Team Foundation Server, or you can install Team Foundation Server on a server that hosts a verified installation of SharePoint Products. In any of these cases, the standard and advanced installation wizards for Team Foundation Server install and configure the Team Foundation Server Extensions for Windows SharePoint Services. If you do not want to set up the team portal during installation, you can use the advanced installation wizard to skip setting up the portal server.
Workgroup Deployment
If you are deploying Team Foundation Server in a workgroup, you must use a single-server deployment. Workgroup environments can use local accounts as service accounts.
