Downloading the Boot Loader to the Renesas US7750R HARP (Aspen) SDB (Windows Embedded CE 6.0)

1/5/2010

If you are installing the Windows Embedded CE boot loader for the first time, or if you are restoring a boot loader that was corrupted, use the following procedure to download the Windows Embedded CE boot loader to the Renesas US7750R HARP (Aspen) SDB.

Note

For Windows Embedded CE 6.0, you must update the Renesas US7750R HARP (Aspen) SDB boot loader to Microsoft Windows Embedded CE Loader 1.1 or later. Be sure that you have downloaded the latest version of the boot loader before downloading the run-time image. The boot loader version can be checked in line 2 of the boot loader output. For more information, see Windows Embedded CE Boot Loader Output for the Renesas US7750R HARP (Aspen) SDB.

To download the boot loader to the Renesas US7750R HARP (Aspen) SDB to flash memory

  1. Turn off the Renesas US7750R HARP (Aspen) SDB.

  2. Boot your device to the OEM boot loader, DMON.

To boot to the DMON prompt, set the switches to the following settings:

    S1-1 S1-2 S1-3 S1-4

    On

    Off

    Off

    Off

  3. On your development workstation, start your terminal emulation software to create a new serial connection and then choose COM1 or COM2, as appropriate.

  4. Configure your terminal emulation software to the following settings:

Bits per second Data bits Parity Stop bits Flow control

    57600

    8

    None

    1

    None

  5. Connect a null modem serial cable between the debug serial port on the Renesas US7750R HARP (Aspen) SDB and a free serial port on the development workstation.

  6. Turn on the Renesas US7750R HARP (Aspen) SDB.

The debug serial output that ends with the DMON prompt, DMON>, appears.

For more information, see OEM Boot Loader Output for the Renesas US7750R HARP (Aspen) SDB.

  7. At the DMON command prompt, type L to download to RAM; then press ENTER.

    Note

DMON does not acknowledge the command at this point.

  8. In the terminal emulator window, choose Transfer, then Send Text File and then browse to the release directory.

The release directory is displayed in the build window at the end of the build process.

  9. Locate BOOT.sre and select it so it can be transferred to RAM.

After the file transfer is complete, the DMON prompt returns.

    Note

In HyperTerminal, you will need to change "Files of type:" to "All files" in order to see BOOT.sre.

A spinning icon appears on the Aspen SDB hex display to indicate that the download is in process.

  10. At the DMON command prompt, type P and press ENTER.

This writes the boot loader to flash memory.

  11. After the boot loader is written to flash memory, set the S1-1 switch to Off.

    Note

All other switches remain the same.

  12. Reconfigure your terminal emulation software to the following settings:

Bits per second Data bits Parity Stop bits Flow control

    38400

    8

    None

    1

    None

  13. Reset the Renesas US7750R HARP (Aspen) SDB and verify that you have successfully downloaded the Windows Embedded CE boot loader.

To see the format of the Windows Embedded CE boot loader message, see Windows Embedded CE Boot Loader Output for the Renesas US7750R HARP (Aspen) SDB.

Note the "Device Name" in the Windows Embedded CE boot loader output. This is useful when verifiying that Platform Builder is connecting to the correct device.
