Stop using HyperTerminal as your telnet client

To stop using HyperTerminal as your telnet client

  1. Open My Computer.

  2. Click the Tools menu, and click Folder Options.

  3. On the File Types tab, scroll down the list of file types to URL: Telnet Protocol.

  4. Click URL:Telnet Protocol, and then click Advanced.

  5. In the Actions box, click Open and then click Edit.

  6. Delete the contents of the Application used to perform action field, and type:

    rundll32.exe url.dll,TelnetProtocolHandler %l

  7. Close these dialog boxes by clicking OK to save your settings.

Important

  • Take note of the existing entry in the Application used to perform action field before replacing that entry. You can then repeat this procedure using the prior data if you want to again use HyperTerminal as your default telnet client.

Notes

  • To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If the computer is joined to a domain, members of the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this procedure. As a security best practice, consider using Run as to perform this procedure.

  • To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
