[The feature associated with this page, DirectShow, is a legacy feature. It has been superseded by MediaPlayer, IMFMediaEngine, and Audio/Video Capture in Media Foundation. Those features have been optimized for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft strongly recommends that new code use MediaPlayer, IMFMediaEngine and Audio/Video Capture in Media Foundation instead of DirectShow, when possible. Microsoft suggests that existing code that uses the legacy APIs be rewritten to use the new APIs if possible.]

Searches the preferred list for a class identifier (CLSID) that matches a specified subtype.

Syntax

HRESULT GetPreferredClsid(
  [in]  REFGUID subType,
  [out] CLSID   *clsid
);

Parameters

[in] subType

A media subtype GUID to match.

[out] clsid

Receives a CLSID from the preferred list.

Return value

This method can return one of these values.

Return code Description
S_OK
 The method succeeded.
HRESULT_FROM_WIN32(ERROR_NOT_FOUND)
 No CLSID matching this subtype was found.
