Backup and Restore applications that work with Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 interact with the Exchange writers via the Windows Server 2008 Volume Shadow Copy Service APIs. Exchange 2010 exposes a native-code, 64-bit library that can be used to check the consistency of Exchange databases. Your application would typically use this API after the VSS snapshot has been taken, and before the database image is written to the backup media.
