Microsoft Announces the Commercial Availability of Windows Azure @ PDC 2009 Microsoft Codename “Dallas” Information Service Christian Liensberger, Moe Khosravy and Microsoft introduces a new information service, Microsoft Codename “Dallas,” also available through Pinpoint and built completely on the Windows Azure platform that enables developers and users to access premium commercial and reference datasets and content on any platform. Datasets currently available through “Dallas” include those from the Associated Press, Citysearch, DATA.gov, ESRI, First American Corp., infoUSA.com Inc., NASA, National Geographic TOPO!, NAVTEQ, RiskMetrics Group, the United Nations, WaveMarket Inc. and Weather Central Inc. Microsoft announced the rebranding of ADO.NET Data Services as WCF Data Services and .NET RIA Services as WCF RIA Services https://blogs.msdn.com/endpoint/archive/2009/11/18/the-wcf-services-ecosystem.aspx WCF Interoperability Highlighted at PDC and ApacheCon At PDC this week we had a booth to showcase the interoperability that WCF gives you through its support for the WS-* protocols. In particular, we highlighted an Apache incubator project called Stonehenge. At Stonehenge we work together with a growing list of WS-* vendors (WSO2, Sun, SpringSource, and soon Progress) to build samples and prove out interoperability between the stacks. |

Availability of Silverlight v4 Beta “Today, at the PDC in Los Angeles, Scott Guthrie announced the availability of Silverlight 4 beta, just four months after bringing Silverlight 3 to market. With the help of several customers we showcased the new features that will enable developers to create the highest quality media and RIA applications for the Web and desktop. These powerful new features offer developers significant benefits in rapidly creating rich software experiences, and include - Enhancements to Silverlight out-of-browser capabilities which enable high quality application experiences on the desktop - Advancements in business application development, including access to other Microsoft products like SharePoint 2010, Office, and Internet Information Services (IIS) - The most amazing HD-quality video experiences on the Web with native multicast and offline DRM support. In addition, our list of customers and HD streaming events continues to grow, with 45 percent of Internet-connected devices worldwide using Silverlight. Today we highlighted the diverse ways Silverlight is being used to power the applications we use every day such as, Portland, OR startup SnapFlow, who demonstrated their new workflow-making platform. We’re also looking forward to helping NBC broadcast the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games in HD-quality video with Silverlight and IIS Smooth Streaming on NBCOlympics.com beginning February 12, 2010”. A nice surprise during Scott Guthrie keynote was also the demo of IIS SmoothStreaming enabled on iPhone (a first), for those of you with iPhones (I am sure for competitive purpose only J) you can actually stream the Big Bucks Bunny movie on iPhone. Release of “Silverlight Media Framework (SMF)” for Structured Media Player Development
Microsoft is releasing a beta of the open-source Silverlight Media Framework (SMF) on Codeplex, enabling developers to quickly deploy a robust, scalable, customizable media player for IIS Smooth Streaming delivery. The Silverlight Media Frameworks builds on the core functionality of the Smooth Streaming Player SDK. SMF is built on a proven code base with dozens of leading Smooth Streaming deployments, including Wimbledon, Sunday Night Football on NBC Sports, the UEFA Super Cup on Canal+, Roland Garros and the Tour de France on France Télévision and many others and by making it available via open-source any developer can more easily build these experiences for their deployments. Key features in the framework include DVR, rewind, alternate language tracks, in-stream data feeds and analytics tracking. The SMF is designed for future third-party extensibility and component modularity, as well as support for other media delivery scenarios beyond Smooth Streaming. The SMF is specifically targeted at Media & Entertainment companies to start with, therefore it would be great to start discussing this with your M&E Accounts.
