When monitoring transactions, you can use event messages to retrieve information about the transaction system status. The DTC generates three types of events: error events, warning events, and information events. On Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003, DTC events are recorded in the Windows event log. You can view these events using the Windows event viewer.

On Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98, DTC events are recorded in a text file called Msdtc.txt. This file is located in the \COM+Logs subdirectory of the Windows directory.

The following table lists and describes event types.

Event type Description
Error events A serious error has occurred, such as log file corruption.
Warning events An abnormal event has occurred.
Information events A normal event has occurred, such as DTC startup or shutdown.
