DISM Supported Platforms

Applies To: Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2

Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) works on Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, Windows Server® 2012, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 images. However, the full functionality is available only when you are servicing a Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2 image. This is because the files and resources required to service any Windows image are located in the image, not on the technician computer. DISM will detect and use the resources available in the target image to update the image.

You can use deployment and imaging tools on a supported host operating system, such as Windows PE 3.0, even if you cannot install Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK). For more information, see Copy DISM to Another Computer.

Supported Platforms

The following table provides additional information about supported platforms for offline image management and servicing scenarios. Online scenarios are only supported on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 with this release. Additionally, some DISM commands are not supported when managing and servicing online images or VHD files.

Note

  • Some DISM commands are not supported on all target images. For information about specific DISM commands, see Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) Command-Line Options.

  • Windows Image File Boot (WIMBoot) is available for client editions of Windows 8.1 Update only (not server or embedded versions). All architectures are supported, including amd64, x86, and ARM. To service a Windows 8.1 Update image that’s been captured or exported as a WIMBoot image, you must use the Windows 8.1 Update version of DISM on a computer running Windows 8.1 Update. For more information about WIMBoot see Windows Image File Boot (WIMBoot) Overview.

  • The host deployment environment is the operating system where Windows 8.1 DISM runs. The target image is the image that is being serviced.

    Note

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2 are no longer supported as a host or target image for the Windows 8.1 version of DISM. To service these images, use a previous version of the Windows ADK, the Windows OPK or Windows AIK.

DISM API and DISM PowerShell do not support managing or servicing Windows Vista SP1, Windows Vista SP2, or Windows Server 2008 target images. For more information, see the supported platform information in the DISM API help documentation.

Resilient File System (REFS) is not supported.
