Visual Studio 2008 SDK 1.1 Beta has shipped!

We just released the latest Visual Studio 2008 SDK online.  The latest version can be downloaded here.

The updates we’re providing with the SDK since our RTM release include:

 

· Significant reduction in size for Visual Studio Shell redistributable packages. The Visual Studio Shell Isolated and Visual Studio Shell Integrated redistributables are now approximately 150 megabytes smaller. The redistributables no longer carry the full .NET Framework 3.5 payload. However, they contain a bootstrapper that automatically downloads the .NET Framework 3.5 runtime if it is not installed on the target computer.

· Support for progress feedback in a chained installation. The Visual Studio Shell Isolated and Visual Studio Shell Integrated redistributables can now pass installation progress back to the chaining process. This lets developers display accurate progress in their setup programs.

· Visual Studio Shell development now supports normal user. Developing and deploying a Visual Studio Shell application no longer requires the developer to be an administrator on a Windows XP computer or to have elevated privileges on a Windows Vista computer.

· The SQL Server team has provided a new XML Tree Editor sample.

· Addition documentation about the shell has been added.

Go ahead and try it out and let us know if you have any feedback.  Make sure you installed the Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 Beta before installing the Beta SDK though.  More info about the Service Pack is here.

    Why are so few of the samples in VB compared to C# ? .vb   714 files,  5061019 Bytes .cs  1803 files, 20979834 Bytes Do you feel VB should be treated as a second class citizen in comparison to C# ?

    To answer Bill's question above - VB has become a "first class citizen" in the VS SDK as of the Visual Studio 2008 SDK 1.0 release back in November.  In Visual Studio 2005, VB support didn't come into play until the 3.0 verison of the VS 2005 SDK.  For the VS 2008 release, VB was natively included and you didn't need to download an additional VB Pack.  We also added a lot of VB samples.  The types of samples available vary depending on the teams providing them.  There are also a few C++ samples, but not that many. We encourage teams to deliver samples in different languages and if you look further down in my blog, I have a demo of the Source Code Outliner in VB and C#.  I normally demo it in VB so the SDK team itself definately wants VB to be as important as the other supported languages. If there is a sample you see in C# which isn't in VB, please let me know and I can talk to the team that owns it to deliver an equivalent VB sample.
