    Hi Vipul,

    I am graduating soon with a undergrad degree in CS. Can you explain to me the difference at Microsoft between a "Software Test Engineer" and a SDET?

    Tim,

    First of all I apologize for the delayed response.

    The Microsoft career site has good definition (http://www.microsoft.com/careers/careerpath/technical/softwaretesting.mspx) of these positions. There is also in-depth description and skill requirements listed for both STE (http://www.microsoft.com/college/ft_softtesteng.mspx) and SDET (http://www.microsoft.com/college/ft_softdesengtest.mspx) positions on the career site.

    The STE or Software Test Engineer is a person who has the passion and creativity to break the software. He is required to have basic coding skills, but more emphasis is on the testing skills. The SDET has design, coding and testing skills.

    However Microsoft recently is trying hard to put STE and SDET on the same level. The Windows Server Division of which Indigo is part of have probably very few STE, if any.

    The STE levels previously started at around 56 whereas the SDET levels as well as SDE levels start at 59. Now there are exceptions to this, but generally that is the case.
