Update authentication method states

Update the properties of a user's authentication method states. Use this API to update the following information:
- A user's signInPreferences (system-preferred MFA)
- A user's strongAuthenticationRequirements (per-user MFA)
This API is available in the following national cloud deployments.

Permissions
Choose the permission or permissions marked as least privileged for this API. Use a higher privileged permission or permissions only if your app requires it. Permissions to update system-preferred MFA

In delegated scenarios with work or school accounts where the signed-in user is acting on another user, they must be assigned a supported Microsoft Entra role or a custom role with a supported role permission. The following least privileged roles are supported for this operation.

In delegated scenarios with work or school accounts, the signed-in user must be assigned a supported Microsoft Entra role or a custom role with a supported role permission. Authentication Policy Administrator is the least privileged role supported for this operation.

To update the sign-in preferences (system-preferred MFA) for a user:

To update the per-user multifactor authentication state for the signed-in user:

To update the per-user multifactor authentication state for a user:

Request body
In the request body, supply only the values for properties to update. Existing properties that aren't included in the request body maintain their previous values or are recalculated based on changes to other property values.
The following table specifies the properties that can be updated.
