Coming Soon: Programming for Unified Communications with Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 on MS Press

There are lots of great books on OCS 2007 and OCS 2007 R2 that will help you install, configure and maintain the server infrastructure for Unified Communications.  With the Programming of Unified Communications with Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 book, the authors and I wanted to create book to focused on building software that leverages OCS 2007 as the back end.  Starting back on Alpha bits, we wanted to write a book that provided all the expertise, tips and tricks that we’ve learned along the way building the APIs and building software with the APIs. 

I’ve been reading early copies of the chapters and I’m really excited about how the book is shaping up.

The books covers:

  • Configuring a development environment for OCS 2007 R2.
  • Overview of the Office Communicator Automation API.
  • Creating communication clients using the Office Communicator Automation API.
  • Overview of the Unified Communications Managed API 2.0 Workflow Activities.
  • Creating a communications enabled business process using UCMA 2.0 Workflow Activities.
  • Overview of the Unified Communications Managed API 2.0 Core SDK.
  • Creating a custom presence publication solution using the UCMA 2.0 Core SDK.
  • Debugging and Troubleshooting.

In each API section we provide an overview of the API, a solution specific scenario and how to implement that scenario using the API.  We wanted to take a scenario based approach so the reader (hopefully, you) could use the book to understand the scenarios each API enables as well as how to implement that scenario step by step.

Writing a book and participating in this project has been awesome.  I’ve had a great time working with the other authors and the folks at MS Press. 

The book is available for pre-order today.  When I have a definitive “street date”, I’ll post it here.

    Thanks for the note Chris, will look for this. You mentioned lots of other great books, curious if you might share what you consider key reading for those looking to get very deep with OCS?  I've been on the lookout for good material on and around the subject.

    Fred, I really like the OCS 2007 Resource Kit (the new R2 version is available for pre-order now) and the information up on TechNet. There are other books on the subject that I've mentioned here, but those are the only ones I have personal experience with. Thanks for the Comment.  Chris.
