Send to OneNote from Outlook PowerToy

At long last, my PowerToy is live! Send to OneNote from Outlook lets you send Mail, Post items and Sticky Notes to OneNote (note, this was previously called Outlook2OneNote).

While you are there I also recommend Send to OneNote from Internet Explorer.

Both of these use the OneNoteImporter that Donovan created.

A lot of folks at Microsoft were instrumental in dogfooding the product as well as answering my never ending questions about managed programmability in Office 2003. Special thanks to Siew Moi Khor and Misha Shneerson for showing me the light.

Note, if you install this PowerToy and you do not see the toolbar icons in your Outlook standard toolbar this is because the Outlook 2003 .NET Programmability Support is not enabled. To fix this you must:

  1. Uninstall the PowerToy if you have already installed it
  2. From the Start menu, select Control Panel, and click Add/Remove programs.
  3. Select Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003, and then select Change.
  4. Select Add or Remove Features and click Next.
  5. Click Chose advanced customization of applications.
  6. Expand Microsoft Office Outlook, and confirm .NET Programmability Support is set to Run from My Computer.

    One thing that would be cool, if possible, woild be when inserting an email/post/item from Outlook into OneNote, either copy the entire item, or copy just a reference to it.

    I could see the copy a reference option causing problems if the user then deletes the item from Outlook, but for me, who stores everything I receive, including RSS entries via NewsGator, in various PST files, it would be a godsend, allowing me to have notepages of entries of relevance.

    Either that, or have OneNote offer the option to collapse a clipping down to save space.

    What do you mean by reference? How would that be usefull. Do you mean just a subject of the message and blank page allowing you to take notes etc?

    This sounds great! I also am a big Getting Things done follower and would love to see this functionality.

    I'd also love to see some way of quickly copying text out of IE. A HotKey would be best. Opening a sidenote and dragging, or CTRL-C and CTRL-V just take too much time!

    What would be nice also is sometimes you download an attachment to somewhere on your hard disk and to store a url to the downloaded doc and store in onenote- why you donwloaded the doc / ppt / xls... etc

    Omar, on my machine, this tool exhibits a problem that we saw during the Office 2003 beta with another .NET-based COM add-in, Business Contact Manager. The symptom is that if you are viewing the Outbox and send a message, the message immediately goes from italics to plain text and is therefore never sent. To test, you may need a profile with POP account and "send immediately" turned off. Ring any bells?
