Dynamic Memory Beta – Supported Guest Operating systems

At TechEd this year we announced that dynamic memory would be supported for virtual machines that were running the following guest operating systems:

  • Windows Server 2003 Web, Standard, Enterprise & Datacenter (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Web, Standard, Enterprise & Datacenter (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2008 Web, Standard, Enterprise & Datacenter (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Web, Standard, Enterprise & Datacenter (64-bit)
  • Windows Vista Enterprise & Ultimate (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Windows 7 Enterprise & Ultimate (32-bit and 64-bit)

But not all of these operating systems will support dynamic memory with the beta release.  Only the following operating systems are supported with the beta release:

  • Windows Server 2003 Enterprise & Datacenter (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise & Datacenter (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2008 Enterprise & Datacenter (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise & Datacenter (64-bit)
  • Windows Vista Enterprise & Ultimate (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Windows 7 Enterprise & Ultimate (32-bit and 64-bit)

The following guest operating systems will be supported after the beta release:

  • Windows Server 2003 Web & Standard (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Web & Standard (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2008 Web & Standard (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Web & Standard (64-bit)

    I thought Windows 2008 R2 was 64 bit only? Is SBS 2008 supported as a guest with dynamic memory? (it is essentially Windows 2008 Standard x64) cheers, Aitor

    Aitor Ibarra - Whoops! Yes, you are right.  I have updated the post to reflect this.  I do not beleive SBS is supported - but let me check. OtherKevin / Ivailo Tzenkov - I cannot say anything specific on that - other than we understand that it is important for us to provide a solution here. Cheers, Ben

    Just for the record - I can confirm that WS2003 Appliance Edition (i.e. Cisco CallManager 4.3.2 runs on top of it) runs fine with DM enabled. With the CCM installed (actually, totally unsupported from Cisco configuration, but anyway...) :)

    Hi, Linux or any other third party operating systems are not listed above. Does it mean that we can can not install them either? Or Does it mean that Microsoft does not provide any support? Thanks

    @Abstar: this article is about dynamic memory, which only works for windows VMs.

    Hi -> using Windows 2008 R1 RTM SP1. I'm also have a problem with support dymanic memory within HYPER-V guests  - EBS Messaging, SQL and Managing Server. This servers are 2008 R1 SP2 with the new integration functions installed. But all this servers prompt in the eventlog: "dymanic memory is in this version of OS not supported". Why??? Please take a post Ben! Thanx.

    Hi, bad news! The MS Hotfix: support.microsoft.com/.../2230887 works only on "native" Windows 2008 Servers - on all EBS servers the Hotfix sad: "This update is not for your system." Is there an workaround? Thanx
