Monitoring System Health

Topic Last Modified: 2011-01-24

Perform the following tasks periodically or as a troubleshooting measure if the system is not performing correctly. If the system fails any of the checks, at least one of the server components might not be functioning correctly. If everything is running properly, there might be a network or connectivity issue. If a component is not functioning correctly, inspect its log file for errors.

  1. Check the available disk space on the database server and on all host computers. Make sure that no disks are nearing capacity.

  2. Check CPU and memory usage for all host computers. For details, see Managing CPU and Memory Usage.

  3. If you are using encrypted messaging, confirm that the mutual TLS (MTLS) certificates are still valid. If they are nearing expiration, arrange to update them.

Additionally, do the following tasks as troubleshooting measures when required:

  1. Check the general network health. Make sure that Domain Name System (DNS) is working. If you are using only Microsoft Lync 2010 Group Chat in the system, check that port 80 is open and available.

  2. Check the administrator rights and permissions for the database user. Make sure that the account used to run the service has the necessary administrator rights and permissions for updating the database.

  3. Run Lync 2010 Group Chat, and sign in to an account. Make sure that the channels load correctly and that chat history loads for all logged chat rooms.

  4. If you are having trouble transferring files, monitor the Web service for Stopped status using Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.

  5. If there is unusual behavior related to instant messaging (IM), such as if an IM channel the user has accessed is not appearing in an Open IM Channel search, verify that all servers, including computers running Microsoft Lync Server 2010, are running.
