Copilot in Edge

Microsoft Copilot can be accessed in the Microsoft Edge sidebar. Users signed in with a Microsoft Entra account receive enterprise data protection. To learn more about enterprise data protection, visit our Privacy, Security, and Compliance page.

The Copilot in Edge experience is changing to enhance data security, privacy, compliance, and simplify the user experience for users signed in with a Microsoft Entra work or school account. Microsoft Copilot offers enterprise data protection at no additional cost. Enterprise data protection (EDP) refers to controls and commitments, under the Data Protection Addendum and Product Terms, that apply to customer data for users of Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Copilot. This means that security, privacy, and compliance controls and commitments available for Microsoft 365 Copilot extend to Microsoft Copilot prompts and responses. Prompts and responses are protected by the same terms and commitments that are widely trusted by our customers, not only for Microsoft 365 Copilot, but also for emails in Exchange and files in SharePoint. This update represents an improvement over the previous commercial data protection (CDP) promise. This update is rolling out now. However, while we make this upgrade, some existing Copilot in Edge features may be temporarily unavailable. Enable Copilot in Edge

To use Copilot in Edge, the following steps are required:

1. The user should sign in to Microsoft Edge with their Microsoft Entra account (work or school account).
2. The user can then access Copilot by clicking on the Copilot icon in the upper right of the Edge browser (Ctrl+Shift+.).

A shield icon at the top of the Copilot experience in the sidebar confirms that Copilot in Edge offers enterprise data protection.

Data used by Copilot in Edge

With Copilot in Edge, browsing context can help users to inform their prompts so Copilot can provide a more relevant response.

Based on the user's prompt and their consent to share data with Microsoft, Microsoft Edge may send relevant data to Copilot. Some prompts don't need browsing context for Copilot to formulate a response. For example, consider the prompt 'Help me plan a trip to Manhattan.' In this case, Edge shares the URL, page title, user's query, and previous conversation history to help Copilot respond to their question effectively.

When the user grants permission to share page information, Microsoft Edge sends Copilot the browsing context of a given session, the user's prompt, and previous conversation history. This information helps Copilot generate a meaningful response.

Enterprise data protection applies to Copilot prompts and responses when a user is signed in with a Microsoft Entra account.

Page summarization by Copilot in Edge (coming soon)

Copilot in Edge can summarize the content of websites and various documents when displayed in the Edge browser. Currently Copilot in Edge can summarize some document types but not others. Refer to this chart to see the current behavior of Copilot in Edge webpage summarization for various document types. The chart is updated when support for summarization increases.

Rewrite by Copilot in Edge

With Rewrite, Copilot in Edge helps users edit their text. For example, Rewrite can help users elaborate on text, revise, adjust tone, format the text, and more.

Once Rewrite is available, users signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID have enterprise data protection when using the feature in Copilot in Edge. Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies are enforced by the Rewrite feature.

How Data Loss Prevention is enforced with Copilot in Edge

Edge for Business comes with native capabilities for enforcing Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies. This way, your organization’s approach to preventing unauthorized data disclosure automatically extends to Copilot in Edge. You can configure these policies using Microsoft Purview, Intune Mobile Application Management (MAM), and Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps (MDA).

When using Copilot in Edge with DLP policies, access to protected web pages and PDFs is restricted. As a result, a user can't copy or paste content protected by DLP policies. Users also can't summarize protected content using Copilot in Edge, and admins can block Copilot from receiving sensitive files through the file upload feature.
