Troubleshooting: Setting up a Wireless Network with a Security Infrastructure

Setting up a wireless network with a security infrastructure consists of many detailed steps, each of which must be implemented correctly to make your network setup work. The following are general guidelines to help you troubleshoot specific areas in your network setup:

  • If you encounter any connection and authentication problems in your network, launch the Event Viewer application from Administrative Tools on your server. This tool provides diagnostic information about different areas of your server setup and helps you isolate the problems. Also, check the online configuration pages for the access point you are trying to connect to. These pages provide detailed connection and authentication logs.
  • If you are unable to enroll your CEPC for certificates because the CA keeps denying the certificate for your wireless client, check the default system time on your CEPC and make sure that it is current.
  • If you are unable to run Enroll.exe from your CEPC, check that you have edited the Project.bib file to include Enroll.exe. If you have edited the file correctly, it appears in the release directory of your CEPC.
  • If you encounter any connectivity problems, check the network cables and adapters on your computers and devices and make sure all the items in your network are properly connected.
  • If you encounter any connectivity problems, restart IIS and IAS.
  • For information about how to troubleshoot your wireless access points and the IAS configuration on your server, read the "Troubleshooting Windows XP IEEE 802.11 Wireless Access" technical article on this Microsoft Web site.
  • If the MAC address is not displayed on your wireless access point, connect the access point to TESTSERVER, and then open DHCP. After DHCP has assigned an IP address to your access point, your access point will be listed in the Address Leases node. The MAC address for your access point will be displayed in the Unique ID column. You can use this address to reserve a static IP address for your access point.
  • If your DHCP server does not lease out the reserved addresses, deactivate the scope, unauthorize the server, and then shut down DHCP. After that, restart DHCP Server, activate the scope and reauthorize the server.
  • If you experience difficulties associating with one of the access points, change the radio channel of the access point using the web configuration page.
  • If you encounter any connectivity problems with your wireless LAN adapter, remove the adapter from the PCMCIA slot on your CEPC, and then reinsert it.
