Outlook 2010 with Business Contact Manager: You Spoke, We Listened

Outlook with Business Contact Manager (BCM) was built to work hand-in-hand with Outlook to help businesses stay connected to their customers. From managing existing and prospective clients, to customizing business forms, to tracking marketing campaigns – Outlook with BCM was always meant to enhance business processes and customer service.

After careful consideration, we decided to simplify the Office 2010 lineup by including Outlook with BCM, a business product, only in volume licensing. We understand it is not ideal for every user. When we made this decision, we underestimated the importance of BCM to our small business customers and those who purchased previous versions of Office in retail stores or pre-installed on PCs. Worse yet, we left many of our customers, who didn’t want to buy through volume licensing, stranded with their data locked in previous versions of Office.

This was a mistake and today we’re announcing a program to make Outlook with BCM available to the millions of existing Outlook with BCM customers who don’t want to buy Office 2010 through volume licensing.

Starting today we are offering an upgrade to Outlook 2010 with BCM at no additional cost to customers who meet the following criteria:

1. Customers who have previously purchased one of the following:

  • Office Small Business Edition 2003 or Office Professional Edition 2003
  • Office Small Business 2007 or Office Professional 2007 or Office Ultimate 2007
  • A stand-alone edition of Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or 2007

And…

2. Purchased one of the following versions of Office 2010:

Affected BCM customers can learn more and get started at https://office.microsoft.com/en-us/FX102040110.aspx. Just follow the steps to get the upgrade to Outlook 2010 with BCM download at no additional cost.

Finally, we apologize to customers who were adversely affected by this oversight.

We hear you, and we hope you will continue to provide constructive feedback so we can ensure that we are meeting your expectations.

Thanks to Microsoft for your willingness to recognize those of us who are small business owners using BCM but not large enough to be able to take advantage of Volume Licensing.

Respectfully, I think you are continuing the first big mistake by not including NEW customers who have purchased the following (unless your blog does not state this clearly). Purchased one of the following versions of Office 2010:    * Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010    * Microsoft Office Professional 2010    * A stand-alone edition of Microsoft Outlook 2010 David Troxell - Encourager Software www.encouragersoftware.com/.../microsoft-office-2010.html

I bought Office Professional 2010 specifically because BCM was advertised as coming with it.  I feel seriously let down that I was misled, and this announcement doesn't seem to include me.  Not impressed.

@David Troxell New 2010 customers are in fact eligible. So as long as you have one of the following, you are eligible – whether you purchased Office 2010 a month ago, or you purchase Office 2010 tomorrow. • Office Small Business Edition 2003 or Office Professional Edition 2003 • Office Small Business 2007 or Office Professional 2007 or Office Ultimate 2007 • A stand-alone edition of Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or 2007 @Ben Gardiner. Now you can get it. Let us know if you have any issues

Kelby, I appreciate that you want to be helpful - BUT you are still missing the point - I are trying to make. A NEW customer is someone who DOESN'T own Microsoft Office products - If you own any of the 2003 or 2007 office products listed - you are a current customer - NOT a NEW customer. BUT this situation CAN extend to an existing customer with ONLY a 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 license requirement for BCM - not 5 as in Volume licensing minimum. While Microsoft is addressing a VERY serious issue - you owned a 2003/2007 Office product with BCM - and initially, upon Office 2010 release - certain previous products - office suites didn't have a migration path without volume licensing. Minimally - I would suggest this is a better marketing approach - Office Professional 2010 - include Outlook with Business Contact Manager 2010 OR  - REGARDLESS of previous 2003 or 2007 office purchase. And make an Outlook 2010 with Business Contact Manager retail purchase available. BTW, as a business owner - my company has a Microsoft Action Pack Development and Design subscription, and currently I can't even get Business Contact Manager 2010 under the subscription (even though I can obtain all the other products available under - Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010) only Business Contact Manager 2007 is available - BCM 2010 has been promised - but so far, NOT available. Thank you for this announcement. Please explain to me the requirement for a prior Office version. Remember, previous Office releases made BCM NOT available to volume license customers, unless they took additional steps, which was to contact their reseller for a copy of the installer. They were licensed for it, but they were under the impression that they needed to buy standalone Outlook to get access to the feature. I remember resolving this discussion a few years ago. Stop messing with the product and just make it available to all users of Office. You are interfering with my ability to deliver new functionality to the product by making it too complicated to buy the product for a new customer. I am considering the prior version requirement a very stupid mistake, so I am making this statement: Outlook 2010 BCM will install on your computer even if you do not have a prior version of Office. I have been supporting Microsoft Outlook BCM in microsoft.public.office.outlook.bcm since 2005. Thank you, Leonid 510-282-1008

Let me echo the sentiments of the others who have posted comments. I want to be absolutely clear and make sure I am not misundrestanding anything. Unless a customers has previously purchased one of the following: •Office Small Business Edition 2003 or Office Professional Edition 2003•Office Small Business 2007 or Office Professional 2007 or Office Ultimate 2007 •A stand-alone edition of Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or 2007 AND (emphasis on AND)
  1. Purchased one of the following versions of Office 2010: •Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010•Microsoft Office Professional 2010•A stand-alone edition of Microsoft Outlook 2010 means to me that if they only bought the "correct" version of Office 2010 and never previously have a "qualifying" product they DO NOT qualify for this. ONE OF THE MICROSFT TEAM - PLEASE CAN YOU CLARIFY THIS. If the above is the case you have missed the bus again.

@David, Leonid, and George, Hello All, As stated in the original blog post, George--you are correct, you will need both point 1. and point 2 below: Outlook 2010 with BCM is available at no additional cost to customers who meet the following criteria:

  1. Customers who have previously purchased one of the following: •Office Small Business Edition 2003 or Office Professional Edition 2003•Office Small Business 2007 or Office Professional 2007 or Office Ultimate 2007 •A stand-alone edition of Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or 2007 And…
  2. Purchased one of the following versions of Office 2010: •Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 •Microsoft Office Professional 2010 •A stand-alone edition of Microsoft Outlook 2010 As for new purchases of Office 2010, there are no plans to include Business Contact Manager in Office Professional, Office Home and Business, Office Home and Student, or Microsoft Outlook in retail. Business Contact Manager is included with Outlook 2010 with Business Contact Manager as part of the volume licensing suites of Office Professional Plus 2010 and Office Standard 2010. Go the following link to see more information on what is included in Volume Licensing: office2010.microsoft.com/.../office-2010-volume-licensing-suites-comparison-FX101825637.aspx

@Amy(Microsoft) I need to do a test of Outlook 2010 with BCM to see how it will work with my existing BCM 2007 database, so I don't want to pay for Office 2010 until I'm sure I can use it with my existing database. Is there any way I can get a trial of Outlook 2010 and BCM?

Amy, thank you for clarifying this. Sorry Microsoft, you have got it wrong again – who remembers OneNote and its original omission from certain licensing models / Office suites. Now it’s included, for free, even in Home and Student 2010. I would hope that people power somehow influenced Microsoft to make this great app available to all - similar discussions to what we are having now about BCM took place then about OneNote albeit you didnt need a qualifying product for OneNote. I may be wrong but I think most businesses who would look at BCM are mostly not volume licensing customers, and I think it’s also true that a large volume licensing or enterprise customer would either use another vendor’s CRM package or Dynamics. So who is BCM pitched at? It also doesn’t make sense to make BCM available with Office Std, which is a less feature rich suite than Office Pro retail or PKC, just because Std is a volume licensing product. If it’s a case of money then charge for BCM or include it with Pro only, at least customers would then have a choice and be able to make the decision themselves without Microsoft removing their decision making process. Believe it or not Microsoft we understand our customers and their needs better than you do.

You didn't get the point. The main reason why people are upset in forums etc. is that BCM 2010 is only included in VL. It's nice for upgraders to get BCM for free now. But how will you (Microsoft) ever be able to gain new customers and stop the people from moving to open source and others by making such stupid decisions? Including BCM in other Editions also for new customers (or very old customers) would be a reason to move from openoffice to office (or to upgrade from older versions like 2000 or XP which are still in use in a very large number). You are missing a chance, guys. Unfortunately like very often... But hey, who cares about BCM and holding existing customers? Let's better spend the time in producing some fancy mobile phones which no one wants to buy!

Under "We Spoke You Listened" I am not so sure. I posted this two days ago on Admin Database tool goes Live & so far I've not had any response So here goes again... :"We are migrating from BCM 2010 Beta to Office 2010 RTM . I've installed fresh copy of WinXP Office2010 (RTM) & BCM2010. (RTM) I can see the remote instance of the BCM 2010 (BETA) Database file, however its greyed out. Do I need to down load and install the latest Database Admin tool and Do I need to migrate (back & then re-import) that file from a "BCM 2010 BETA" File to BCM2010 RTM file? Please help us all to understand this.. Thanks JM

OK decided to upgrade to 2010 outlook to qualify for BCM.. installed it and ... well..  FINALLY, the BEST CONTACT MANAGER SYSTEM ON THE MARKET BAR NONE... Best features: Todos can be turned into Tasks by taking the body of the email as task message body for better todo-Task linking and therefore management, especially as I use Toodledo to sync tasks to iphone. iPhone can noew sync Business tasks thanks to the unique BCM contact sharing facility with Personal folders Contacts. NICE! I can present opportunities in a nice  table The gadgets are more flexible. everything seems more flexible and adaptable The reports are mind blowing Future Wants. A small section in outlook linking to Tasks  and business projects that links goals and current / new beliefs.

Where can I report BCM 2010 bugs?   When Tasks, which are linked to a contact record, are reassigned to another user of BCM 2010, and they accept it, it loses the "Link" to the Business Contact Record. As a result, the person who gets someone else's Task has to re-link the Task to the contact record. Thanks!

I purchased a copy of Microsoft office professional plus 2010 in May of 2010 - . The link that veriifies the product code indicates ineligibility...When I call the customer service number listed in the error message, they had no idea what I was talking about, and tried to forward me to the licensing division.  why is this not elibilbe?  I previously had a copy of th business contact manager with prior version of outlook.

@Donna, Sounds like you have the previous version of Office and also Office 2010, so you would be eligible. Just go to the link at  office.microsoft.com/.../FX102040110.aspx it will ask you for your Office 2010 product key, then you can download Business Contact Manager 2010.

Just installed BCM2010 today, seems like everything takes forever! If I click on anything at all it takes a minute for the action to actually take place.  It's been half a day, I'm hoping for some reason it has something to do with indexing or the cache messages.  Can anyone help or confirm this is the issue?

After some trouble shooting here is what I've found Outlook works ok with my hotmail account (using outlook Connector) and it works fine if BCM is disabled, however with my regular IMAP email accounts, and with BCM running, it's impossible to use. Someone please help!!

I have had Office Pro with BCM on both 2003 and 2007.  All my records are in BCM.  I wanted to try trial version of 2010.  Downloaded and it does not have BCM.  I cannot access all my old records.  I am in a real fix.  What do I do?  I tried to download BCM but site tells me my trial product key will not let  me.   Microsoft is completely abandoning their loyal customers for many years and creating serious problems with financial implications for them.

@Raymond, Business Contact Manager 2010 does not have a trial version. So, the following is information on getting BCM: Microsoft is offering an upgrade to Outlook 2010 with BCM at no additional cost to customers who meet the following criteria:

  1. Customers who have previously purchased one of the following: •Office Small Business Edition 2003 or Office Professional Edition 2003•Office Small Business 2007 or Office Professional 2007 or Office Ultimate 2007 •A stand-alone edition of Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or 2007 And…
  2. Purchased one of the following versions of Office 2010: •Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010•Microsoft Office Professional 2010•A stand-alone edition of Microsoft Outlook 2010 Affected BCM customers can learn more and get started at office.microsoft.com/.../FX102040110.aspx. Just follow the steps to get the upgrade to Outlook 2010 with BCM download at no additional cost.

Can anyone help clear up the confusion that seems to be reigning on the BCM issue?  I have Office 2007 currently and have the product key. I purchased Office 2010 Professional almost solely to get BCM (and my company wants to standardize on 2010).  When I try to download BCM, it tells me that my 2010 product key isn't valid.  I've checked and confirmed validity of my 2010 product throught the Microsoft ga site, but I still can't get BCM.  What am I missing?   One more comment:  It seems Microsoft is doing more harm than good by muddying the water so much on this BCM issue.  Exactly why are they making it so difficult to obtain?  If it was included in earlier versions, and there is an obvious demand for it, why can't they just make it available to those who purchase their software instead of making people jump through these impossible hoops?  I used to be a staunch Microsoft defender.  Now, not so much. Thanks.

Hi, I seem to be having an issue with a user that is trying to connect to the BCM shared database remotely trought a VPN connection. Everything was working fine a couple of weeks ago. Nothing has been changed. But when we try to sychronize with the server it ends up canceling the process and then Outlook might freez 1 out of 2 times. @Don When you go through the steps of the download from office.microsoft.com/.../FX102040110.aspx there is a support number to call tell them about the product code not being valid, they may be able to help.

Where is the IT support for BCM software for small businesses?  No one has responded to my error log, or the issues I'm having with Tasks being unlinked when reassigned to another person on the team.  BCM has given us endless issues for a year and a half and the support for BCM is mostly nonexistent.  We're changing databases to Salesforce now... Having BCM hasn't been very pleasant or problem free for our small business, it has a lot of feature and collaboration gaps, ...and I'm the IT guy here.  Good luck making BCM better without better support. Microsoft has left BCM in the dust. If anyone is considering BCM, consider your other options. -Jim

  • Anonymous
    November 01, 2010
This upgrade opportunity would meet my needs but as has been stated earlier this is not a long term solution as clearly Microsoft is saying well we will let you upgrade for now but not in the future (non volume license client). Is the Microsoft message, that we will provide an upgrade this time but use this time to find a better product that will work in the future because soon we will cut you off? As in my earlier post.  The lack of BCM is the only thing stopping me moving to the Mac. If you take it away on the PC, there will be no reason for me to stick with Microsoft at all.

I don't really think you listened... I can't understand why BCM was part of the 2010 Beta but not part of the trial.  Now my understanding is that I cannot get BCM stand alone.  That is the only part of the Office suite I really use.  I love outlook w/BCM especailly 2010.  But w/o BCM I have to look elsewhere for solutions. It seems to me since 2003 MS has always had a problem with how to position this product.  I think you guys are spending too much time on trival things like OneNote, and not on what could be a real money maker - BCM standalone 2010. You guys are confused.

OK, I am really not understanding. The other day the website stated that "Microsoft Office 2010 Pro Plus" was eligible for the BCM download. Now the website is stating the following: Download Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2010 now You can download Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2010 at no additional cost if both of the following conditions are met: You purchased a copy of Outlook with Business Contact Manager with Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Office 2007, or standalone Office Outlook 2007, and You purchased a copy of Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010, Microsoft Office Professional 2010, or standalone edition of Microsoft Outlook 2010 I have a valid MS Office Pro Plus License and now I still can't get BCM? Thanks Amy. I see what you are saying, however, I downloaded and installed MS Office Pro Plus "Trial", then purchased a "License Key" from an outside source for MS Office Pro Plus 2010. I did not go through Digital River and I am not a "Volume License" customer. I only purchased a valid License Key and do not have the media. I have been using BCM since Office 2003 and have customer info "locked" in it that I can no longer access since the MS Office Pro Plus "Beta" expired on 10/31/10. I really need BCM, so how do I go about getting it? Once again, I did purchase MS Office Ultimate 2007 a while ago and do have the media for that. I did not purchase 2007 during the "Guarantee" period. Please advise. LJackson10

Dear folks, it appears that this time the demand of the exisiting user base of BCM 2003 & 2007 was big enough to develop this new upgrade program for BCM 2010. BUT Microsoft doesn't want to welcome ANY NEW small (meaning less than five installations) customers to BCM 2010 who will use it FIRST time after recommendations of exisiting customers. So this time (2007 -> 2010) we were lucky enough to make MS change their minds. But what's happening in the days of 2010 -> eg 2014? If today MS is not interested in broadening their userbase will they still be interested in maintaining the 1, 2, 3 and 4 seats offices with the next office version? Even though I welcome the decision made, I cannot deny the bitter aftertaste that comes with it, leaving the future of this product for small offices a little too uncertain. Finally one question: What does the future for BCM 2010 on Windows Mobile look like? Does the exisiting AddOn for mobile devices work with BCM 2010? If not, will there one be released for WM v5.x and v6.x or even for v7? Thanks for helping & greetz from Berlin, Wolf Oemler

To Amy (Microsoft)  you message above that states "@LJackson10 -- Office Professional 2010 includes Business Contact Manager. Please see the following link: office.microsoft.com/.../office-2010-volume-licensing-suites-comparison-FX101825637.aspx  It should already be in the product."  Is incorrect in that Office Pro does have BCM but the Office Pro Plua DOES NOT.  I purchased Office Pro Plus thru a government employee program, no volume license.  It DOES NOT have BCM.  I run a small home business with one computer.  I need BCM or I will be forced to use another program as I will not downgrade my office programs.  The loss of BCM and it's capabilities is really a problem.

I was forced to uninstall Office Pro Plus 2010 Beta 32Bit on my Windows Vista Ultimate 32Bit Laptop and then installed the Office Pro Plus 2010 32Bit "Trial". I would like to create a tab called vendors, and would like to add contact (or vendor contact) inside the vendor accounts, similar to the way you would ad an account and then add business contacts to the accounts. I have been able to create these 2 tabs, the problem is when you add vendor contacts under the Vendor accounts, they are not seperated from the business contacts, so they when you look at the vendor contacts tab there is nothing there, because all the contacts you add under the vendor account actually just show as normal business contact, so they show in the same list as my account contacts. Hopefully this makes sense.

I should qualify for the BCM download as I have bought earlier Office 2007 Professional incl. BCM which I used several years. After launching 2010 I decided to stop using BCM as you offered only in volume licences. Therefore I bought Office 2010 Home and Business (Full Version). When I go through the registration process on the BCM download site (following the link mentioned in this post), I entered my serial number for 2010, after going throught the complete process there is only the download link for Office Home Business 2010 offered and no link to download BCM. Why that? Maybe I have to say that I am located in Germany. Is is a US Offer only? One shocking thing for me is, that after explaining this case to the customer support on the download site, they answered that they even do not now anything about that BCM offer. This is a bit strange. So now... is it possible to download BCM or not?

John, our approach has changed since BCM 2007. Instead of supporting the many different mobile devices with a specific application for each device, we've added Business Contact Synchronization. This feature copies BCM Contacts to Outlook, then keeps any changes made in Outlook or in BCM in sync between both copies. Now, when your client syncs their Outlook contacts to any other mobile device that supports Outook contacts, they''ll also be syncing BCM contacts. You can activate Synchronization from the Backstage View, but only if you're not using Sample Business data. There are some limitations in the fields that come accross, but all the basic information is there. And you are correct, your client cannot create new BCM contacts from the mobile device. Hope this helps, Chris

Could someone please have a look at my question posted in the last two weeks? In short SQL 2005 does not have the SQL agent so one cannot squeeze the database is that correct? What about going forward.  My Small Business does meet the licensing requirement based on prior versions for the 2010 release but what happens when the next Office release rolls around.  We use ACT! now and plan to either update that or go to BCM.  My vote is BCM but now I am apprehensive.  If we convert all this data and begin using the product only to have the rug pulled out from underneath us because of changes in licensing in a few years my Partners will not be happy with me.

I would like to support the comments by JSweeney, we also implemented BCM for the same reasons, particularly the ability to separate professional contacts from personal.   The decision to remove the ability for outlook to sync with windows mobile 7 also raises some serious questions about the direction of Microsoft office products.  Is there likely to be any review of these product directions or do we need to migrate to another platform?

You certainly are not listeming to the developer community. Business Contact Manager 2010 is a great product, but it is essential that it's data can be used elsewhere from customized applications. We need documentation on the database schema, stored procedure usage for getting at the business data. For example I have a client that would like me to do the following for a web site I am developing for him: In BCM he creates "Opportunities" (wish I could change the name) the opportunities represent Career Placment Campaigns and have two user defined fields, one called "Career Description" that's used to hold a detailed description of the career and one called "Display on Web Site" which is a bool that will be used to qualify the record for inclusion on his web site. The web site needs to access the BCM database and find all of the "Opportunities that have the "Display on Web Site" field set to true and use the Opportunities title and "Career Description" fields to add to a display list on the site, each list item also gets a button for a visitor who may be interested in the particular career to click on for more information. This button will take them to a page where they fill out their info and possibly attach a resume. When this form is submitted the info on it will be used to create a "Candidate" contact and a "Product" (wish I could change the name) that is linked to the "Opportunity", the "Product" represents potential candidates for the "Opportunity" or Career Campaign. This should all be doable but without any documentation I'm pulling my hair out trying figure out how this monster works?? PLEASE RELEASE SOME DEVELOPER INFO ON BCM 2010!!!!!!! If anyone else has made any progress in doing things like I have mentioned above I would love hear from you. jfeyes@griffinautomation.com

Don't know why Microsoft makes and markets a great tool like BCM that is clearly targeted for small business and yet doesn't allow the typical small businesses to have access to it....  I mean explain to me the reasoning behind why we can't buy it directly or why they didn't create a retail version of Outlook with BCM?  The product may as well be vaporware.  I'd love to see Steve Jobs take on the marketing strategy around this one...  Ever seen Heartbreak Ridge?  There is an apt term that describes this strategy. Thanks again Microsoft.

Hi, I have installed BCM/Outlook 2010 and am trying to figure out how to run my marketing plan with it. I have 5 different business projects (marketing campaigns) that I have created in BCM. I have named them "Face-to-Face", "LunchBunch", and "Alzheimer's". I can do a report of business projects and they are listed. But they DO NOT show up on the gadget Business Projects - All that is on my Dashboard. Is this a flaw or am I doing something wrong? Thanks for your help. Kevin

I have purchased "Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010" and went the the web site specified in this blog to register to download the BCM 2010 version. Both the product numbers return errors that they are not eligible for the BCM 2010. Is this correct? Thanks

I purchased Office Professional 2007 with business contact manager and subsequently replaced this with Office Professional Plus 2010. I am now being told that I cannot have Business Contact Manager. If I want it I have to uninstall Office Pro Plus 2010 and reinstall Office Pro 2007 and lose out on Infopath, Onenote and Sharepoint or I can keep Office Pro Plus 2010 but forfeit BCM!!!! I have legitmately paid for ALL of it so why can't I have it all? This is wrong, wrong, wrong!!!

We have just migrated from Act 2010 to BCM 2010, we are wanting to customize the fields in opportunity reports, for example, we would like an opportunity sales funnel report that allows the customer name to be included.  Another example would be to include gross margin in the opportunity by contact report.  Is it possible to generate a custom opportunity report that includes a selection of fields that we want, the fields are in the database, but we would need to combine the fields available in multiple reports, all the fields are not available in any single report that we have found. I appreciate your feedback on these issues. Thanks, Tom

I have Office 2007 with BCM, and love it.  Wanted to recommend to my friend with a small business (single PC), who currently uses Outlook Express and definitely does not need volume licensing.  Were BCM available for purchase retail with Outlook that is what I would recommend to her, but I'm afraid we have to look elsewhere for another email solution. Its a shame your penny pinching is driving away customers...

I also have Office Professional Plus 2010 (Volume License) and do not have BCM - I have counted 14 other requests - Notice that PLUS means that BCM is included but I have spent the past two hours trying to find out how to get it installed and/or activated - WHY NOT just allow the PLUS licenses access to the BCM downloads as well - In other words include Office Professional PLUS 2010 in the list of allowed BCM Downloaders so this problem can be solved. Amy has asked for each personal email - my is LouGoodGuy@Hotmail.com to fix this issue but it would seem so much more simplier to allow us to get to it from the same download page as everyone else. I also noted and this is also very important - If you are a MAPS or Partner - The BCM 2010 download is not listed anywhere but if you select Office 2010 Professional Plus and go through the downloads the BCM download will appear.

After downloading the trial version, I purchased Office Professional 2007 with BCM on 4/20/2007 primarily because of BCM.  It worked great at first, and then I started having troubles with it.  Specifically, my databases kept disappearing.  I worked with 2 guys from the BCM development team (Vinit Jain and Mukesh Agarwal) to try to work out the issues, but was not unsuccessful.  After losing a 3rd database I decided BCM was not for me.  Since then I have become increasingly unhappy with the Outlook/Act setup to manage my contacts, particularly when it comes to synching with my phone, now a DroidX.  I started looking at the 2010 version of BCM and decided to take the plunge again.  I then discovered the multi-license issues.  Yesterday I went ahead and purchased the stand alone version of Outlook 2010 and then downloaded the BCM add-in (quite a large file when you only have 3Mb download speed).  Unfortunately, BCM is not to be found.  I suspect that is because BCM removed itself from my Outlook 2007 program when I installed it on the computer I purchased last year.  I have my Product Keys for the original purchase.  What suggestions do you have for getting BCM to show itself on my computer?

I went to the "Downloand Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2010 Now" page and followed the instructions.  Please note that though the Office Pro 2007 program that I bought FROM MICROSOFT had BCM included originally.  But for some reason when I transferred the downloaded file from my old computer to my new computer it did not install.  As I was not using BCM at the time it did not bother me.  So I quess the question is..."If BCM does not exist on the 2007 product, will that prevent Outlook 2010 from installing through the download?  Or is it something else?

I have many engineering friends and they have a wonderful thought process when it comes to developing software, but often not in the implementation of said software. Couple of things here

  1. History view. From and To fields are alway blank when they should list details from emails at least.
  2. Outlook should default to using the BCM contacts list first for lookups etc without requiring each client be updated.
  3. Random error msgs when creating a contact like "An Outlook Address Book entry cannot be used as an e-mail address in a contact" appearing yet allowing you to continue adding a contact but then not adding the email address to be tracked makes no sense. Thanks M

Let's be honest.. BCM2010.. it doesn't really work does it.  Not when you get down to brass tacks.  It crashes regularly and the fact that the view resets every time you navigate away from a screen means that it's painful to use daily. If you can't consisently see the view you want - that is the information that matters to you - each time you go to your data then it leads to confusion, which leads to mistakes and frustration. There's lots of really good functions - but the basic things just don't work consistently. It would be usable if there was some MS support, but there isn't... not really. The last blog was posted by the BCM Team was several months ago, which kind of says it all.

I've been asked to make a recommendation to my company of 8+ users about using BCM 2010 as it first appeared to be more streamlined and integrated than Goldmine, which they currently use.  However, after reading through all 16 pages of this blog, as well as several others that list similar problems, I am hesitant to make this recommendation. If it works as advertised it will solve many of our problems, but it sounds like it's nearly impossible to get it to do that; if you can even manage to get a copy of it after jumping through what seem like interminable hoops. Any final comments/suggestions from previous posters that can narrow it down to a yay/nay for me?  Thanks very much.

Hi BCM Team, Can you tell me if BCM 2010 synchronisation of contacts is compatible with exchange 2003 / 2007? I am currently using BCM 2010 with a hosted exchange mailbox which i believe is on the 2003 platform. If I drag a contact from BCM to outlook contacts the contact appears then disappears from outlook contacts. If i turn on synchronisation in BCM all the contacts are copied to outlook contacts but then disappear from outlook contacts which in turn then removes all BCM contacts. A reply would be much appreciated. Thank you

Wow, all this time trying to figure out how to use BCM with Office 2010.  I found this forum and read the requirements.  Microsoft this really doesn't make smart business sense.  Many people on here are very small businesses...meaning one computer!  How can a person with just one computer use BCM if this is our first time to purchase outlook?  Please tell me that all that time in MBA school wasn't wasted in learning that selling product even at a small profit is better than no profit at all!   Open up the doors to us very small businesses and you might maintain loyal customers.  Don't and I'm sure Apple can come up with something!

Why is it necessary to buy both an old version and a new version of Outlook in order to have the Business Contact Manager?  Why can't you have it with just Outlook 2010?  I don't need any of the older versions. Thank you.

Why is Microsoft Amy not answering any of the questions related to why new customers can't buy BCM?  They are only answering questions where the answer is "you must have Office 2003 plus Office 2010." and ignoring all other questions.   People are stating over and over again that the most common user of BCM is going to be a new Office customer who has a small business that can't afford volume licensing, but Microsoft Amy is ignoring them.  Companies that can afford volume licensing generally don't use cheap contact managers, they have custom-built programs or use something more substantial like Goldmine.

FYI, I put the following post on the Office Developer's Forum, and was advised that this blog was probably a better place to turn: Can any one tell me how I would go about handling a BCM database migration failure?  My details:  I was running Office 2007 Pro on Windows 7.  I'm on a single maching with plenty of RAM (3GB), plenty of disk space (6GB).  I don't have any custom forms in BCM, nor am I utilizing any VBA or VSTO solutions .  The size of my BCM database itself is about 260MB.  Anyway, I just installed Office 2010 Professional, and every time I try to run the BCM migration wizard I get an extremely unhelpful error message about the migration failing (unhandled Win32 exception error).  I have VS 2010 (though I'm only a .NET novice), and have tried launching VS 2010 as a debugger, but after VS loads all of the windws are empty!  I've probably tried to run the BCM migration wizard almost 20 times, and have rebooting my laptop several times as well.  The migration always fails at exactly the same place in the progress/thermometer bar.  This is EXTREMELY frustrating.  Help???!!!!

Hi Amy, Similar to many others, I work in a small non profit office and we purchased a MAK license for Office Professional Plus 2010. It indicates that this comes with BCM but I am unable to download as it says it is not a valid key. Can you please let me know how to get BCM as it looks to be exactly what we need to better manage our contacts. Email chris.mclachlin at slwdb dot org Thank you.

Now there are all infos about the next Windwos Phone 7 Update "Mango" outside. Tasks can be synchronized between Exchange and the phone. Will there be a way to bring the project tasks to a Windows Phone? The complete project management in BCM 2010 makes no sense, if we can´t have the project tasks on the road, or how do you see this?

Linking Contacts to BCM Acct Records? Can someone please explain why you can link an Email, Task, Calendar Event, etc. from Outlook to BCM but you CAN NOT link a Contact?  I would like to link an Outlook Contact to an Account or mutliple accounts and not have to create a separate business contact in BCM.  Is this feature coming in an upcoming update?

BCM does not come with the regular version of Office.  It's possible that BCM is part of Office Home and Business, but I'm pretty sure you have to go all the way to Office Professional to be entitled to BCM.

^^ Some extra clarification---if you own a copy or copies of Microsoft Office Professional 2007, which came with BCM 2007, you can download BCM 2010 with Microsoft Office Home and Business. Otherwise, you have to buy the Pro version in 2010, as you did not previously own BCM 2007. Also, i'm still having trouble installing the client version on a workstation. I would LOVE some help on bypassing the system requirements check that the setup runs, as my PC specs are WAY above the minimum quoted specs required, so i'm not sure what's up. Help please <3!!!

I have come accross the following problem in BCM 2010 that I hope you can help me with: In the Communication History panel, when I try to add the 'To' and 'From' columns from the 'All Mail fields' they show up as blank. Therefore I am not able to see these details for any emails saved in the Communication History. However, when you switch from Item List to Preview in the 'Current View' section of the View tab in the ribbon you are able to see the data for these columns (they show up in colour blue). Could you please let me know what do I need to do to be able to display the 'To' and 'From' columns in the Communication History for any emails saved in BCM? Thank you in advance,

Hi, we are using BCM 2010 with a shared database on a server. PCs are new Win 7 x64 and server is Win 2008 Std x64. Our 3 users are reporting numerous crashes when using BCM which mean they have to reboot their PC to restart Outlook - this happens multiple times per day and is getting very frustrating. Initially the PCs had ATI Radeon cards but we read that these could cause a problem so we clean installed the PCs with Nvidia cards  - no improvement. Can you advise who I might contact to get help with this? Is there a service pack due? Many thanks in advance.

jaypeakskier - I just did a little searching myself on this, but I can't offer a lot of hope.  I'm an experienced bcm user but wanted to see what sources there are for helping me in my upgrade of Office/bcm 2010.  I looked on Amazon and was surprised to find that there are no titles strictly dedicated to bcm.  All I can suggest is to see if you can find a book on Outlook that happens to cover bcm, too.  And, yeah, even the bcm materials on microsoft.com and msdn.com strike me as rudimentary.

I don't find definitive answers.  I have seen links (now dead) that purported to go to beta versions of a 64 bit BCM.   Two questions: Is there a 64 bit version of BCM? Can it be installed in a terminal server environment? (the 32 bit can be) The existing Office installation is a volume license (5) of Office Professional.

BCM 2010 Hosting Restrictions?   Can BCM 2010 be hosted to any of the MS SQL Workgroup Editions so that we can get past the 1GB RAM limitation?  How about MS SQL 2008 R2 Workgroup Edition?  Can we host BCM 2010 to that?  Are there any tech docs available to clarify this? Thanks! Jeff Bell

We are currently on BCM 2007 and are upgrading to BCM 2010.  We have MANY custom fields and need to ensure they transfer.  What do we need to do to BCM 2010 to ensure we have a clean transfer?  HELP. :)

Hi all, Is it possible to print the BCM form layout exactly like what we see in that application? I have a user at my workplace who wants individual record to be printed with fields in the form layout (just like what being displayed). I have explored the BCM and there is no option to do so. The only way to print records it to produce a report using report tools. Unfortunately, it displays all records in a table form. That is not what the user want. I tried to use Mail Merge, but it seems hard especially when there are a lot of custom fields in the form. Since the users mostly aren't Tech Savvy, I'd like to avoid any complex operation. Please advise/suggest for any solution/useful links. Thank you.

I echo the same thank you for acting fast. I do also have one more comment. As a LONG time Microsoft believer, I was drawn to Office 365 because the initial promotion of all the office products but also the Outlook 2012 with BCM. Can I download the BCM for my standalone Outlook 2012 that I downloaded via the Office 365 download, upgrading my Outlook 2007 with BCM

We really like the BCM 2010, but I want to give you an advice in improving the software. The sync with outlook contacts is pretty nice so I can use this contacts on my smartphone. But I do not want to sync all of the BCM contacts. So it would be really usefull to filter the contacts for synchronizing, e.g. by category. I really hope some ms developer reads this comment...

I have read through this thread and have noticed that many others are experiencing the same issue that I am facing. Any assistance available would be greatly appreciated.  I meet all the previous version requirements and have purchased multiple Office Pro Plus 2010 licenses (and of course BCM was NOT included with it).  Going to the page to download it gives me a rejection on my valid install key (all of them).  My email is abcecurs@hotmail.com if anyone can provide assistance.

My company has us on MS Office 2007, Exchange. MS Outlook 2010 is a supported product with our tech support team, although the company won't buy it for me without me making a business case for such. Fine with me -- I'm happy to purchase MS Outlook 2010 myself BUT I want a standalone version of Outlook 2010 WITH Business Contact Manager. Just want to buy it off the shelf and install it. Seems like that still isn't an option as late as April 2013 even though these comments go back as far as 2010. Can that be possible?? You have thousands of customers who would gladly pay for it as a standalone product and install it but you won't sell it to them unless they meet all sorts of previous requirements. That is absurd. Why wouldn't you just make it available and let people buy it? Anxious to hear how I can purchase this product. annwheath@gmail.com

Our small company has Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 volume licensing through Microsoft with 9 current licenses.  We would love to get our hands on the BCM as a potential replacement for our current solution.  I have tried going through the processes on Microsoft's website to obtain BCM, but each key that I try I receive an error that it is "Key provided represents a product which is not eligible for free download".  Any ideas/thoughts on why I can not get BCM downloaded?
