How to migrate mailboxes from Exchange that is not a front end server?

Hello!

We have our emails on an Exchange server that is not a front end server. The server is hidden in the LAN which is protected by a firewall. The server is hosted by a polish company. When we receive mails, the mails is taken by a smart pop software to our user exchange mailbox.

We are now moving our mailboxes to Office 365 and I`m in charge of the transfer. I have created new emails to everyone and I want to migrate our old mailboxes from the Exchange server to our new mailboxes. I need to do this to route all mails coming to the old mailboxes into the new mailboxes. I have tried to migrate, but I have a problem creating a new endpoint.

I need to setup the new emails before changing DNS settings. What do I do now?

    Hi @Øyvind Hegge ,

    Do you still need to maintain the on-premises Exchange server? If so, you may have to open up the ports as mentioned in this document so that you can go with the Hybrid Migration method to move the mailboxes over to Office 365.

    If the Exchange server is not needed any longer, considering that other migration ways all involve creating migration endpoints which may not work in your scenario, you can migrate by importing PST files to new mailboxes. Below are some documents which might be helpful for your reference:

    To route incoming mails to new mailboxes in M365/Office 365, you just need to add and verify the old domain name into Office 365 and then change the new mailboxes to use the existing domain. After that, you can update your domain's MX record to point to M365/Office 365 so that new mails will start coming to Microsoft 365.
