Afternoon Community,

I am working in a multi-forest company, using SCCM 2012 for patching. We are on the 2010 update. I have several servers that are getting the error 0x800F0986(-2146498170) when installing cumulative updates (KB005030).

I get this error when installing the update via SCCM, Manually (by downloading from the Microsoft Catalog) and even when trying to install from Windows updates itself. This error message (at least 0x800F0986) when I run the command dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Things I have tired thus far to no avail.
* Disabled \ Removed Third party Anti-virus software
* Rebooted
* Ran SFC /Scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
* Ran the Windows Update troubleshooter (typically tells me a reboot is pending)

The majority of the systems patch without issue, on every domain however I have a handful through each domain doing this, and not quiet sure where do go with this now.

Please find WUAHandler Log file form the most recent pain in my butt

Thank you in advance for any help you are able to provide!

    @Limitless Technology your suggestion did not help resolve my issue.

    Windows Update server is running on the computer. Other updates such as the servicing stack, .Net updates and Defender\Endpoint protection Anti-virus malware definitions are installing without issue. Cumulative updates are still giving me the error message 0x800F0986(-2146498170)

    To reiterate Cumulative updates such as KB005030 are the only updates i am getting this with others are installing via SCCM just fine.

    Hi again ,

    I suggest you to download the KB update manually from here and run the patch and see if it is working https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx

    And if it doesn't work

    Download the most recent Servicing Stack Update (SSU)

    Determine whether you are using 32-bit or 64-bit Windows:

    1. From Start, choose Settings.
    2. Select System.
    3. Click About.
    4. Scroll down to System type.
      Download the version of the latest SSU that matches your version of Windows from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
      Restart your device and check for updates.

    Hope this Answers all your queries , if not please do repost back .

    @Limitless Technology

    Both a manual install of the cumulative update and an installing via Windows Updates fail.

    I have ensured that the latest servicing stack has been installed (In this case KB5005112) Computer has been rebooted, and Third Party Anti-Virus disabled.128679-servicing-stack-installed.png128640-error-installing-update.png
