Maggiore è l'oggetto value di un dato element, maggiore è la probabilità che venga element visualizzato in primo piano. Analogamente, se un oggetto element ha un valore relativamente basso value, element è probabile che venga visualizzato in background. Ad esempio, un oggetto element con un value valore pari a 5 verrà visualizzato sopra un element oggetto con un value valore pari a 4, che a sua volta verrà visualizzato sopra un element valore pari a 3 e così via. I valori negativi sono consentiti e continuano questo modello di precedenza.

I membri di una Children raccolta con valori uguali ZIndex vengono visualizzati nell'ordine in cui vengono visualizzati nella struttura ad albero visuale. È possibile determinare la posizione di indice di un elemento figlio eseguendo l'iterazione dei membri della Children raccolta.
