The Authenticator app is requesting a code from the app itself

I recently deleted the Microsoft Authenticator app by accident, and why I downloaded it again and tried to sign in it is asking for a code from the app itself. I use an institutional account from university and now I can’t activate or even log in to 365 because it ask for the code from the app. Someone please help me.

So is the only solution asking the admins of the uni/work department to bypass the 2 step verification? My university uses Canvas as the resource/communication portal and it relies on logging in using your Microsoft work account, and as you've guessed authenticating using the Microsoft Authenticator app which I've been fighting over for, for the past couple of days!

This has to be the dumbest problem I have seen with anything Microsoft I am trying to log in to the authenticator app on my phone and it is requesting a code form the authenticator app, a code I cannot get till I sign in. so 1 solution presented was to log in on the web portal and remove the device that is linked to you r account. When I try to login to the web portal, guess what? it wants a code form the authenticator app that I need a code from the authenticator app to log in to the authenticator app so I can get the code to login to the web portal so I can do my job I dont understand how this is even a problem with a multi billion dollar company that charges way too much for software that is some of the worst software I have ever used. I have never had a problem, this stupid with any free software I ever used

I agree with @Big POS ,this is insane. I keep typing different ways to ask the same question hoping to find an answer online because I cant believe that this is an actual issue! Crazy.

How do you login to the account in order to change the verification settings? When it insists its going to send a code somewhere so you are able to sign in? I have the password and everything, but the code goes nowhere. This is ridiculous. I've been on with Microsoft for 4 hours today and 2 hours yesterday and I still haven't been able to reach anyone to help!

I had the same problem. Anything i tried did not work beacuse i could access any account to change the seeting of tfa. Idk how much help this is gonna be but i just used an old pohne. It was abrely fuctional but it worked. The phone taf had the account i was looking for

I am facing the same bad problem. Transfer all things from my Iphone 12 to Iphone 15 and delete the 12 to my wife. After this the MS authenticator started to do this bothering problem of a insane loop. Try to talk to someone at MS is the worst thing you can do. Apple answers you immediately and give you a solution in minutes. what can we do withouth the specialized tech of MS? Anyone can provide a solution?

This is still an issue, and it's completely ridiculous. Either let users use an authenticator that functions correctly or fix your software; this is beyond unreasonable. My phone is not connected to my Microsoft account at all, so I can't even remove it from the MS Authenticator to re-add it. It's absurd that this is even a problem. Who on Earth thought designing an authenticator app that requested its own authentication codes to even sign in was a good idea?

I had the same exact problem. I tried downloading again the App, but obviusly I needed to log in, and it was asking the code from itself. The only thing that worked for me was to call to my instituion and they fix it in a second.

I just had this - solution was to go into entra and add text authentication to the user, so they can authenticate the authenticator with a text. Once the authenticator is happy you can delete the text number as an option from the users account. Also, Microsoft - SOLVE THIS

Had the same issue. Being able to use text authentication worked for me but I had to go through the sign-in process twice (using the text method both times) to get back in to the authenticator app.

I had the same problem. I contact my company's IT help desk. The problem was that that they had to re-authorize the Authenticator app for new phone. Once they did that, I was able to log onto Outlook, my IT folks sent me a QR code to scan, and when Authenticator asked me to enter the two-digit number it popped up on the screen. No more than 5-minutes. So it sounds like the issue is resolved by re-authorizing Authenticator on the new phone.

You can restore from backup (assuming there was one) but make sure no accounts have been added to the newly install app. Then sign on with recovery account to do the restore.

You can recover your account credentials from your cloud account, but you must first make sure that the account you're recovering doesn't exist in the Microsoft Authenticator app. For example, if you're recovering your personal Microsoft account, you must make sure you don't have a personal Microsoft account already set up in the authenticator app. This check is important so we can be sure we're not overwriting or erasing an existing account by mistake.

If no backup then you may need to get in touch with school admins to reset the two factor setup.

I had the same problem as all of the others, it kept on asking for authentication from the same app. So, I went to log in at the Microsoft website > settings > security info > sign-up methods > phone number (text). Then, you'll have to log in again thru the authentication app back, click the "I don't have access to my authentication app", and use the phone number instead to get codes. Do the same thing for the Teams app on ur phone/web apps.

I had the same problem when migrating to a new corporate Phone. The solution for me was to go to https://login.microsoftonline.com/ then REMOVE the 2 factor authentication. ADD it back again. Then remove the Authenticator app from the phone, and install it again. This worked.
